A case that ages on purpose

Half-formed, writing it down before it evaporates: an enclosure designed around the assumption that it will be scratched. Not ruggedised. The opposite. A surface that keeps a record of everything that has happened to it and looks better for it.

Anodised aluminium doesn’t do this. It just looks damaged. Brass does it, waxed oak does it, certain leathers do it. The scratch stops being a defect and starts being provenance. The object earns a face.

The problem is that this is easy to say and hard to specify. “Wears well” is not a tolerance. You can’t hand a vendor a drawing that asks for dignity.

Maybe the spec is just: choose a material where the failure mode is beauty.

No idea if there’s a product here or just a mood. Parking it.
